Being polite Unit 1 小学六年级英语(深圳朗文版)Longman下册

Pat's English teacher, Ms Taylor, is giving Pat some advice about manners in England. Read and listen. Then tick or cross each picture.
Pat:             Ms Taylor, what should I do when I meet new people?
Ms Taylor:  When you meet older people, you should shake hands with them and say, "My name's Pat. It's nice to meet you." With younger people, you can wave and say, "Hi, I'm Pat."
Pat:             Should I hug them?
Ms Taylor:  No. We usually don't hug people when we meet them the first time. We only hug our friends.
Pat:             When the family isn't at home, how should I answer the phone?
Ms Taylor:  First, say, "Hello." Then take a message.

   A magazine quiz

What does "be polite" mean? This means we should be nice to other people. When we are nice to other people, they are usually nice to us, too. People like to work with, play with and talk to polite people. Are you polite? Let's find out.
1. When I answer the phone, I…
     a) say, "Who are you?"
     b) say, "Hello."
     c) say, "What do you want?"
2. When I meet an older person, I…
     a) look at my feet and say, "Hello."
     b) wave and say, "What's your name?"
     c) shake hands and say, "It's nice to meet you."
3. When the bus is coming, I…
     a) line up and wait.
     b) push and stand first.
     c) sit down on the street.
4. When I get on the bus, I ...
     a) run to the first seat.
     b) let old people sit down first.

Listen and chant.
I'm in a foreign city with busy streets.
There are lots of people and things to eat.
Wow! These things are all very new.
What do I say and what do I do?

Say, "Excuse me," and "Pardon,"
And "Nice to meet you."
Take messages, shake hands
And close your mouth when you chew.

Say, "Please," and "Thank you,"
                                            And line up, too.
When you are polite to others,
They'll be polite to you, too.

Further reading
Listen and read.
People all over the world shake hands for many different reasons.
We shake hands when we meet new people or during special
festivals. Athletes often shake hands before or after games.
Business people shake hands when they make a deal!

Why do we shake hands? Why don't we shake feet? A long time ago,
most people carried knives or guns. When people did not want to
fight, they showed their empty hands. Maybe people shook hands so
they could not hide knives in their sleeves. Later, hand-shaking
became a sign of peace.

Today we don't have to worry about people with guns and knives but we
still shake hands a lot! The reason is simple --it's still a sign of friendship.
