Past Continuous

 
 

The form of the past continuous is was/were + VERB-ing. The past continuous:

  • describes activities and situations that were in progress at a specific time in the past.

Examples

Mary was visiting her mother yesterday at 4:30.

Jane was booking a ticket to Vancouver last Monday at 10:00.

We can use the negative with the past continuous.

Negative Past Continuous (was/were + not + VERB-ing)

Examples

Mary was not visiting her mother yesterday at 4:30.
Jane was not booking a ticket to Vancouver last Monday at 10:00.

We can ask questions with the past continuous

Question Past Continuous (was/were + Subject + VERB-ing?)

Examples

Was Mary visiting her mother yesterday at 4:30?
Was Jane booking a ticket to Vancouver last Monday at 10:00?
