Camping trip assignment
The people who went camping and hiking last weekend are being given the chance to write a 1000-word paper on their experience. They should include information about finding the camp spot and setting up their tents. Please include details of hiking to the top of the mountain and what you saw when you arrived there. Then you can talk about taking down the tents and coming back to the city. Only students submitting papers will be given extra credit for the trip. Papers must be handed in to the English Department no later than Friday.
Explain the speaker's concerns and what he decides to do about them.

Possible answer: The students who went camping and hiking last weekend were asked to write a paper on their experience to get extra credit for the trip. One of the students complained that they weren't told that a paper was required before they went hiking. He wanted the extra credit and as he had the experience of camping out and enjoyed it, he could write about it.

Sharing food and friendship
Meeting with friends is a good way to have fun in our spare time. Since almost everyone enjoys eating, asking friends to meet at a restaurant is a good idea. Eating out means you can try foods that you can't have at home. Many ethnic restaurants have foods that are fun and different. Breaking bread—that is, eating with other people—has been a social activity for as long as people have lived. Everyone from kings to common people finds it enjoyable to share food together. Even important events, like business meetings, almost always include food.
The speaker explains the origin of sharing food with other people. Explain why it is still important today.
Preparation time: 30 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: The speaker said that people in past times had to travel long distances and were usually tired and hungry when they arrived. From kings to common people, everybody always found it enjoyable to share food together. Today, even important events, like business meetings, nearly always include food. It makes people feel good and in a friendly mood.

[*]You will now listen to a conversation. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

Explain what Meg did on the weekend, what her problem was, how she solved it, and what you think about her solution.
Preparation time: 20 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: First, Meg had to mow the yard. Then, it was her little brother's birthday and she had to go bungy jumping with him. She was scared of it, but her brother loved it and he wanted to go the next weekend. Judy reminded her she had a project for her chemistry class on Monday, so Meg decided she would have to study all weekend. I agree that her school work saved her from bungy jumping, but I would't feel so happy about it (I like bungy jumping).

According to the lecturer, what did German workers request? Why?
Preparation time: 20 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: The lecturer said that some of the workers' organizations in Germany wanted to work 30 hours a week instead of 27, at the same pay. The reason for this was that companies were not making enough profit and the workers wanted to keep their jobs. However, they would still have more leisure time than Americans.
