Pat's English teacher, Ms Taylor, is giving Pat some advice about manners in England. Read and listen. Then tick or cross each picture.
Pat:             Ms Taylor, what should I do when I meet new people?
Ms Taylor:  When you meet older people, you should shake hands with them and say, "My name's Pat. It's nice to meet you." With younger people, you can wave and say, "Hi, I'm Pat."
Pat:             Should I hug them?
Ms Taylor:  No. We usually don't hug people when we meet them the first time. We only hug our friends.
Pat:             When the family isn't at home, how should I answer the phone?
Ms Taylor:  First, say, "Hello." Then take a message.

Listen and read.
People all over the world shake hands for many different reasons.
We shake hands when we meet new people or during special
festivals. Athletes often shake hands before or after games.
Business people shake hands when they make a deal!

Why do we shake hands? Why don't we shake feet? A long time ago,
most people carried knives or guns. When people did not want to
fight, they showed their empty hands. Maybe people shook hands so
they could not hide knives in their sleeves. Later, hand-shaking
became a sign of peace.

Today we don't have to worry about people with guns and knives but we
still shake hands a lot! The reason is simple --it's still a sign of friendship.
