    New dress code at school
A new dress code has been adopted by the school administration. No shorts or sleeveless shirts are to be worn to class. All clothing must be clean. Pants should not have holes in them. Shoes must be worn — no sandals are allowed. Girls should not wear mini-skirts. This will present an atmosphere more in line with an educational institution. It also looks nice to visitors who come to our campus. All students and faculty are asked to follow these rules.
Do the students agree with the new dress code at school? Why?
    Preparation time: 30 seconds
    Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: The first student does not like the new dress code, but then she agrees with the second student that it is better to be dressed in clean, nice clothes to go to school.
  • You will now read a short passage and then listen to a talk on the same topic. You will then be asked a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

    People in Art
The style that shows people in art has changed many times. In some ages, the popular form was to show tall, thin people. In other ages, people were heavier. The idea of "pretty" or "handsome" changes with different cultures. These changes are shown in the art of each culture. There is no general rule for beauty. The study of art presents a good idea of what was the accepted physical beauty of the time. It also shows us how people dressed during that age.
According to the lecturer, does art show changes in the way people can be represented and the concept of beauty? Why?
    Preparation time: 30 seconds
    Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: Yes, art shows how people were represented in olden days and now. It also shows how the concept of beauty changes with time, and the differences in the clothes people wear at different times in different cultures.
  • You will now listen to a conversation. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.

  • You will now listen to part of a lecture. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Now play track 1-17 on the MP3 to hear Question 6.

According to the lecturer, how does saying more about someone help the person you are talking to? Why?
    Preparation time: 20 seconds
    Response time: 60 seconds

Possible answer: When you talk about people and you give as many details on them as possible, you help listeners imagine them. Saying if he is a boy or a girl, tall or short, the color of his or her hair and eyes, and what clothes he or she is wearing, helps people recognize who you are describing.
