3D in Video Games Failed to Gain Traction

3D in Video Games Failed to Gain Traction
Electronic Arts, the world's No. 1 publisher of video games, remains skeptical about stereoscopic3D technology in video games. The tech has not gained a lot of traction in the last several years. Moreover, even Sony Corp., which has been generally optimistic about S3D, did not demonstrate any stereo3D content this year at tradeshows.
"3D is certainly not in any way on our list of things we are focused upon as a company. I look at gaming, and it just doesn't seem to be a major factor. [.] It is just not a technology particularly in our world of gaming that seems to have got traction. If I was skeptical 18 months ago I remain skeptical," said Peter Moore, chief operating officer of Electronic Arts, in an interview with Eurogamer website.
According to DisplaySearch, shipments of stereo3D reached 10% of all LCD TV panels last year and that share will only grow going forward. In total, around 21 million of S3D TVs were sold last year. The number is still pretty low to catalyze all of game developers to add stereo3D to all of their titles as 21 million is well below installed base of S3D capable consoles, Microsoft Xbox 360 and Sony PlayStation 3.
Sony itself will continue to push stereoscopic 3D technologies onto the market as it needs to sell new HDTVs, Bluray disc movies, S3Dcapable video games, Bluray 3D players, PlayStation 3 and 4 consoles, for conglomerate the technology clearly makes a lot of sense. Nonetheless, even Sony was quiet about S3D at the recent E3 and Gamescon tradeshows. The company will only add stereo3D to games when it makes sense.
"We spoke about it at E3 two years ago and everyone put their glasses on for the first time, and the next year we did the same and everyone did it again. You know, there comes a time when you do not need to talk about it anymore. Do not read into the fact too much that we have not announced anything about 3D. Where it makes sense, 3D technology will be included into our games," said Jim Ryan chief executive of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, in an interview with CVG.
If 3D weren't such a pain in the duckass, and cost so much more, then it would be more widely adopted.
Do you have to buy a special TV/Monitor that cost a lot more? Yes
Do you have to buy special expensive glasses? Yes
Does 4>5 year old console hardware have the horse power,Replica Oakley? No
Have to jump through hoops to get it to work on PC? Yes
Do you have to buy special pricey versions of bluRay to see 3D? Yes
Is it any wonder why people aren't interested? I'm waiting for the first generic monitors to offer 3D with a reasonable price point + next gen consoles. Then the adoption will begin.
3D gaming rocks though when you have to set up properly.
No EA is wrong,Those who have the 3d setup such as myself are still too busy drooling over 3d porn to worry about playing any 3d games just yet!
On a serious note though,Replica Oakley, 3d games own, Crysis 2 in 3d is pretty freaking awesome, As well as other fps games out there like Metro 2033.
Totally agree with above comment though, Pricey and sometimes a pain getting it setup properly,It's not the hardware you just plug it in and calibrate and it works,It's the software getting games to display the 3d correctly is sometimes annoying.
They should be doing that anyway when they say only adding 3d stereoscopic content into games when it makes sense,Some games just don't belong in 3d. No need for them to try and make every title in 3d.

The Monument Singles Collection 1960

The Monument Singles Collection 1960
In March 1965  with seven American top 10 singles behind him since Only the Lonely in early 1960, the most recent Oh Pretty Woman of the previous year  Roy Orbison recorded a television show in Holland with his band of Beatleclones in sharp suits and leather boots.
Out front Orbison did what he only ever did. He stood there in his prescription sunglasses, dressed in black and sang with no emotion visible on his pallid and puffy features.
No one would ever claim Orbison was a pop star  he was a few weeks short of his 30th birthday and had enjoyed his first success, the doowop influenced Ooby Dooby, a decade previous in the Elvis era  and people didn't quite know how to respond.
The Dutch audience (seen on the previously unreleased DVD accompanying this double disc of Orbison's most productive period) sat in mute politeness.
Two years later when Orbison topped the bill at the Auckland Town Hall over the Yardbirds (with Jimmy Page) and the Walker Brothers, the audience was equally nonplussed. Some walked out. All he did was write and sing.
But his was a style founded on dramatic narratives (sometimes melodramatic), naked emotion and melodies which could soar through a couple of octaves.
Orbison's greatest songs  Only the Lonely, Running Sacred, Love Hurts, Crying, In Dreams, It's Over, Oh Pretty Woman among them  were recorded in a fouryear period in Nashville on the Monument label at the start of the 60s. In fact, by the time he got to Holland for that television show, his hitmaking career, not that he knew it, was finished . until he joined Bob Dylan, George Harrison, Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn in the Traveling Wilburys more than 20 years later.
Orbison's reputation rests on these songs where he discovered not just his voice  Ooby Dooby and his preMonument singles bear little relationship to his later career  but also his style.
His first Monument successes  Only the Lonely and I'm Hurting  kept one ear back in close harmony doowop (both have "dumdumdum dumdee do wah" intros), but their themes of naked pain were rare from male singers at the time.
When Orbison married that vulnerability to a rhythm borrowed from Ravel's Bolero for his 61 hit Running Sacred  an insecure guy fearful her former boyfriend might come back and want her again  he achieved a new height in emotionalism, and also pulled off an extraordinary vocal performance. It was two minutes and 12 seconds, unlike anything else in pop before it.
Because of songs like that  and Crying ("I was alright for a while . but I saw you last night"), In Dreams (used to unsettling effect in David Lynch's Blue Velvet) and It's Over  Orbison survived the British Invasion. In fact in early '63 he toured Britain with the Beatles, then New Zealand with the Beach Boys and later the Rolling Stones and the Yardbirds/Walker Brothers.
But in 1965 he left Monument, tried his hand in films like his old pal Elvis and didn't trouble the charts again until the Wilburys. He died in '88 just before the release of a new solo album, Mystery Girl.
Through the decades many have covered his songs,Replica Oakley, but they always chose from this remarkable body of work. Over two discs in widescreen mono,Oakley Oil Rig, that voice, that drama and those songs live again on what would have been his 75th birthday.Related articles:
