Closure of student center
The student center will be closed from Wednesday through next Monday. During this time necessary repairs to some of the facilities will be made. The restrooms will be completely redone. That is, new sinks and toilets will be installed. Many of the tables and chairs in the food area will be changed. Some of these are very old and need replacing, others have been broken or damaged. Sofas in the lounge will be recovered in new fabric. New desks for the study area will be installed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause but hope the changes will be appreciated.
Why will the student center be closed? How do the students react to the news?
Preparation time: 30 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds
Possible answer: The student center will be closed to redo the restrooms, change some chairs and tables in the food area, recover some sofas in the lounge, and install new desks in the study area. Some students ask why the repairs are not done during vacation time to avoid inconveniences to them. A girl explains that everyone, including people from administration, are also on vacation and after all, repairs will take only a few days, and they will have a redecorated student center with new furniture.

Scandinavian Furniture Design
When we think of modern furniture design we usually begin with the movement during the 1920s. Much of this new look came from Scandinavian countries - Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and sometimes Finland. Famous designers copied them for the general public. Much of the extra decoration that was part of furniture design up to that time was removed. Only the basic functional parts of chairs, tables, lamps and so forth, were preserved. At first many people felt the new forms were not attractive.
What do the students suggest when the professor asks what is important to look for in furniture design?
Preparation time: 30 seconds
Response time: 60 seconds
Possible answer: One of the students suggests chairs must be comfortable and another, that size is also important when we look for pieces of furniture.
