Index to the Basic Words
This word-list is a guide to the 850 words as they are put before the learner in Basic English
(Section One of this book) and The ABC of Basic English (Section Two, Part 1 of this book).
It might seem that, as we have in The Basic Words (Section Two, Part 2) a complete handbook
of the words, giving in short form all directions for their senses, forms, behavior,
and special uses, there would be little need for such a list. But it is in The ABC,
and to a less degree in Basic English, that the separate words are talked about
in relation to the system and to one another, and that light is given on the facts which are
simply noted in The Basic Words. It will frequently be of help to take a look back at
what has been said about a word in the detailed accounts of the system.
The most important of the complex words (see pages 156-58) are I here listed in their places.
A great number of others may be seen in The Basic Words. For the
international words,
see pages 35-36 and 235-36, and for a selection of onomatopoeic words,
page 37, and page 151.
