EXERCISE : Translate into Basic

Exercise 1.
5 . Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) The rooms in those houses are narrow.
(b) I put the flower by the pot.
(c) It (the table) is against the bed in my room.
(d) The pot is under the table and the table is between the doors.
(e) These are my flowers.
(f) This door and that window are wide.
(g) A round table is between the door and the bed.
(h) That building is my house.
Exercise 2. - My Room
6 . Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) A white cover is on the table.
(b) I put my seat against the wall.
(c) The picture over my bed is in a narrow, black frame.
(d) I take the book off the floor and put it in my drawer.
(e) The covers on the round cushions are black.
Exercise 3.
5 . Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) This side of the box is black. The other sides of the box are not black.
(b) The women get tickets from the man at the ticket-office.
(c) My flower-pot is here with the other flower-pots.
(d) He takes the boxes into another room of the house.

Exercise 4. - At the Station
6 . Translate into Basic :
(a) A man with his hands in his pockets is at the door of the ticket-office.
(b) My friend is slow and the woman is quick. She gets the seat by the window.
(c) The porter takes the black bag from the station to the house and I take the other bags.
(d) Trains are not frequent from this station.
(e) Her friend is not in the store.

7. Translate into Basic :

(a) He has some food on his plate.
(b) They are not here, but they will be here when the train comes into the station.
(c) I may do some work for them after my meal.

Exercise 6. - An English Family

Exercise 10. - A Town
5. Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) Will be see the hospital when we are at the bridge ?
(b) Do not put an advertisement on the wall in front of the church.
(c) I will take you to the library with pleasure.
(d) We get some light at night because the fire is very bright.

9 . Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) There is one good library here.
(b) Good morning. Are you in pain ?
(c) Please give these instruments a wash before you put them back in the drawer.
(d) He gets a sudden pain in his head and it makes him give a cry.
(e) The work which I do gives me little pleasure.
(f) Do not make the end of the stick black.
(g) That hat does not give her face much shade.
(h) Keep something round your face while you are out.
Exercise 12. - At the Bathroom Door
8. Translate into Basic :
(The following sentences should be given to the learner in his own language for translation into Basic.)
(a) Bob goes into the bathroom early and takes all the warm water for his bath. That is why I get a cold one every morning.
(b) The drain is outside the bathroom window.
(c) If the boy does it again, give him a blow on the ear.
(d) They are still having an argument and their voices are getting angry.
(e) Come again in an hour. The coat is not ready.
(f) They are waiting only till the end of the song.
(g) The waste of soap in this hospital makes me angry.
(h) In this quiet garden only the birds and the leaves make a sound.
(i) Put the shelf high over the basin.
Exercise 13.
5 . Translate into Basic :
(a) Do the small hosts go far from the harbor ?
(b) If this person says, ' I have news from the Island,' let him come in.
(c) This is the last bit of land which you will see till you get to the end of your journey.
(d) They put the potatoes into boats and take them across the river.
That is how they get them to the market.
(e) It is late in the day but the ship is still outside the harbor.
(f) Why has the boat only a small sail ?
(g) It is dark and cold by the water.
(h) Why does news from your family give you pleasure ?
(i) There are some words on the cover of the box.
Exercise 14. - A Ship Comes In
5 . Translate into Basic :
(a) His answer to her questions may make his reasons clear.
(b) He is making signs with his hands because he has no voice.
(c) When will the ship come into view and from what direction will it come ?
(d) If the fish comes in this direction I will get it in the net
(e) What is the name of that blue flower by the water ?
(f) If they go to the other side of the fire, the smoke may get in their eyes.
(g) Who will take the first step?
(h) There is a short cord hanging on the rail.
(i) I will put the question to one person after another.
Exercise 15.
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) Did she see flowers in the grass ?
(b) We took our stockings off because our feet were warm..
(c) At the end of our walk we saw the church through the trees.
(d) They said together, "Let us go out into the field."
(e) She kept the man waiting in a very cold room till she was ready..
(f) The parcel which came was for some other person.
(g) The man in the bed opposite the door was not awake.
(h) What is the reason for these sudden changes. ?
Exercise 16. - A Talk in the Train
5 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The roots of this beautiful plant do not go far into the earth.
(b) She had no desire for company but she frequently went up to town with one of her friends.
(c) In the end these long walks may be good for the boy.
(d) The account which he gave of their talk did not seem quite clear.
(e) If you take your eyes off the boat in front of our boat, you may get into trouble.
(f) The hope of seeing his brother again kept him awake, but the others went to sleep.
Exercise 17. -- (no reading)
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The wine in the green bottle was better than the wine which he had put in my glass.
(b) He sees quite well with one eye but the other eye is getting worse.
(c) The man at the ticket-office says that the later trains are less frequent.
(d) We will give the boy more money if he does the work well.
(e) She has put on her best hat, which is like a basket of flowers.
(f) My opinion is hat the jewels in the smallest box are the most beautiful.
(g) I did not take one of the cheapest sponges because I saw that they had greater holes than the dearer ones.
Exercise 18. -- At the End of the Day
4 . Translate into Basic.
(a) The start of our journey was an event of some interest for those who saw the great ship go out of the harbour.
(b) I see from the second page of the accounts that our debt has got less.
This knowledge has put me in good humour.
(c) Even when the water in the mine came up to their necks, the men went on.
Their behavior was a complete surprise to everyone. An account of it was given in every newspaper.
(d) The girl will not go to sleep while the lights are on but she my do if they are put off.
(e) My decision is that I will do nothing foolish.
(f) The steel spring is a part of the apparatus
(g) The bag in which I keep the wool is full.
(h) He has a little knowledge of ships, but he is a business man and not a seaman.
(i) They get through their work more quickly when he is in the office than when he goes away.
Exercise 19. -- News of Old Friends
6 . Translate into Basic :
(a) He does not do any teaching now because his hearing is not good enough.
(b) I will never let these events go from my memory.
(c) He is an able business men and his company is doing well.
(d) After her mother's death she went about in a black death.
(e) Society gives every boy and girl the chance of a good education.

Exercise 20. -- A Talk About the Weather
6. Translate into Basic :
(a) He was not able to put up his umbrella, so he got wet.
(b) The years he had been in prison had made a change in him.
(c) Her gray hair is a sign that she is getting old.
(d) The mist which comes up from the river is not healthy.
(e) In the fall the yellow leaves come off the trees.
(f) There are fruit trees by the south wall of the garden.
(g) This roof hasn't enough slope.
(h) The rain made such a noise that it kept him awake.
(i) It is said that a ring round the moon is a sign of bad weather.
Exercise 21. -- Summer Time
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) His chief desire was to have his father's approval.
(b) You have only given me a different example of the same thing.
(c) If my digestion had been better I would have had a drink with you, but one has no control of one's stomach.
(d) Boys and girls have a natural desire for play.
(e) Naturally, you would have a better knowledge of the language now if you had made a start when you were younger.
(f) He said that he would make a protest about the prison when he was free again.
Exercise 22. -- (no reading)
6 . Translate into Basic :
(a) Some new rules are going to be made about the punishments which may be given.
(b) Someone will have to have a hard seat.
(c) You might have put on your blue coat with those gray trousers.
(d) A foolish impulse made him say that he would make th journey again tomorrow.
(e) Though they had a great respect for him, he had little control over them.
(f) Even yesterday you would have had a better chance of getting a house than you have today.
(g) Though the clock has had a fall it may not be broken.
(h) He had no interest in the invention even though he saw that it might have great value.
(i) Their fear seems to have got greater in the night.
(j) Did your friend on the committee say what changes are to be made in the rules ?
Exercise 23. -- A Last Minute in Bed
6 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The glasses would be brighter if they had been given a rub.
(b) For most persons, learning prose is harder that learning verse.
(c) He has a better sense of touch than a normal person because he is not able to see.
(d) In my opinion your verse in not as good as your prose.
(e) The frame has to be made of a hard substance such as steel.
(f) I had no knowledge of the existence of this mine though my house was quite near it.
(g) The animal got up, gave itself a stretch, and got over the wall with a jump.
(h) Even when his daughter come to see him in prison the man gave no sign of his feelings.
(i) Her only thought is for the comfort of herself and her family.
(j) This disease makes the leaves of the plant yellow.
Exercise 24. -- Getting a New Cook
5. Translate into Basic :
(a) First she makes the beds and does the shoes. Then she does the
washing up.
(b) The farmer had to get a horse to take his produce to market.
(c) You had no authority to get the trees cut down and the wood
taken away.
(d) The eggs were cooked in boiling water till they were hard.
(e) When the boys come in after working in the fields their boots
make the floor dirty.
(f) When the dog was ill the cook took care of it. Now it is all
right again.
(g) He was feeble today and he was able to take only a little soup.
(h) My sister had had no experience of small babies and she had no
idea that it was such hard work to keep them clean.
Exercise 25. -- At the Office
6 . Translate into Basic.
(a) The secretary gave his overcoat and a bag with some important papers in it to a man at the railway station, and he was given a receipt for it.
(b)The price of the goods in the store is dependent on the price which the store has to give for them to the maker. It is necessary for everyone to make a profit.
(c) A guide to the weather is printed every day in the newspaper.
(d) Great attention was given to the public statement made by the country's representative.
(e) The damage would have been greater if there had been more ink in the bottle when it was broken.
(f) Did the insurance company make a request for a full account of the facts ?
(g) This writer's way of pleasing his readers is to give them the feeling that they are wiser than he.
Exercise 26. -- Looking for a House
6 . Translate into Basic.
(a) The greater the size of the board, the harder it will be to get it through the opening.
(b) The end of the room is cold because the electric heater [fire] has been placed in the wrong position.
(c) There is no doubt that the key was taken away from under the flat bit of stone by somebody who was not the owner
(d) The only plaything which the little girl had was a small brown dog made of wool, which she kept talking to all day.
(e) The condition of the boy was so bad that his mother did not let him go to school.
(f) The color of her dress did not go with her hair.
(g) If the man keeps playing wrong notes we will make him go farther on
(h) Everything in the house will become his property after his father's death.
Exercise 27. -- Taxes
6 . Translate into Basic.
(a) The theory has been put forward that, at their birth, all men are equal.
(b) There is a danger that the new tax on all gods produced in other countries may have a bad effect on trade.
(c) An interesting comparison may be made between the small political units of the past and the great nations which are our political units now. It would seem strange to us if every important town had its separate government.
(d) It was hard on the boy that his father didn't let him have any pocket-money while he was at school.
(e) A special payment is sometimes made to men who do work in conditions of great danger.
(f) The cause of the damage is still not clear, though a great number of suggestions have been put forward.
(g) A limit has been fixed by the present Government for the profits which may be made in industry.
(h) The question now under discussion is how to get a better distribution of goods.
Exercise 28. -- Getting One's Picture Taken
8 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The writer has such a strong sense of humour that she is never able to be serious about anything.
(b) The girl had taken trouble with her hair, which was beautifully waved, but her skin was needing attention.
(c) It was hard for the camera-man to take a picture of the monkey because it never kept in one position for more than a second.
(d) The store has not a wide range of lipsticks at the present time. You may,however, be able to get one of the right color.
(e) The two men were walking side by side and looking as if they had never been angry with one another.
(f) He came to the decision that he was tired of looking at mountains and would go to a different part of the country.
(g) When he gave his nose a blow he made a surprisingly loud noise.
(h) The went on up the mountain till they came to a group of buildings.
(i) The fowls were given rice every day but they got no fatter.
(j) Taking the feathers off the bird was a slow process.
Exercise 29. -- The Dressmaker
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) I have put in my notebook the measure of the steel ring before it was heated, so we will be able to see how great the expansion is.
(b) She had on a well-cut dress made of enough material.
(c) The point of the scissors has made a mark on the table.
(d) The button on her skirt was loose.
(e) The new elastic substance is as smooth as silk.
(f) The two bits of printed linen had been stitched tightly together.
(g) The cook was pointing at the fat which had been cut off the meat.
(h) Boys and girls are more interested in the amount of sweets they get than in their quality.
Exercise 30. -- Fishing
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The miner got a shock when a mass of stones and earth came down on his head with great force.
(b) The rat had got its sharp teeth into a wing of the dead bird.
(c) When the smoke from the fire got among the bees, they came out from the hollow stem of the tree.
(d) There is generally so much rain at this time of the year that the level of the river became higher than the level of the fields.
(e) The stem of grass which he put to his mouth had a bitter taste.
(f) After long observation and experience he made himself an expert.
(g) The bee may be guided to the flower by its smell.
(h) When you get the trick of using your throat muscles in the right way, you will be able to make this sound.
(i) The story of their swim from the ship to the island has been given in the newspapers.
Exercise 31. -- Housework
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) The flame of the match went out because there was a strong current of air from the open window.
(b) The workman had some sort of paste in a bucket, which he was putting into the cracks in the wall.
(c) Leather of the best quality is made from the skins of pigs.
(d) The brass kettle is an ornament and is never used. It is polished every morning with brass polish.
(e) She gave the pot a shake, but the sweets were sticky and did not come out.
(f) I will give you a test to sec if you have a knowledge of he rules.
(g) The representatives of the two governments say it is probable that there will be a complete exchange of views.
(h) There had been no addition to the library for some time, and the books were covered with dust.
(i) You made the only possible answer and have no reason for regretting what you have done.
(j) When the old woman came down to the living-room she put on her glasses and had a look at the letters which had been sent to her for her birthday.
Exercise 32. -- Moving In
8 . Translate into Basic :
(a) If the structure had been made of brick it would have been stronger.
(b) When he had a slip on the polished floor he put out his arms to keep his balance.
(c) Before I put the plane away I will put a little oil on the blade.
(d) The powder and the liquid were mixed in a glass vessel.
(e) Whenever she takes a breath she gets a pain in her chest.
(f) The poor man was sent into the air by the animal's horns.
(g) When the manager of the store sees my gold watch and chain he may give me credit.
(h) Do not put the screws in till you have got the edges of the two boards parallel.
(i) The wallpaper is dirty where the cupboard and the chest of drawers had been against it.
(j) If the shelf gives way and the plates go down on the floor, there will be a smash.
Exercise 33. -- Men and Machines
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) He put some gains of the orange powder into the liquid but no chemical effect was produced.
(b) A statement is made into a question by changing the order of the words.
(c) It would be possible for the output of coal to be increased by a better organization of the industry.
(d) The feathers of the male bird are more brightly colored than those of the female bird.
(e) After the adjustment had been made, the wheels went round at a different rate.
(f) The highest degree on the scale is marked in red.
(g) The cat's motions are beautiful because all its muscles are moved in harmony.
(h) The work came to a stop when the whistle was sounded.
(i) The men were so used to being given orders that their reactions were automatic.
Exercise 34. -- Looking at Pictures
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) He has a complex theory of the relation between colour and sound which is very interesting.
(b) Regular changes of sea level are caused by the attraction between the earth and the moon.
(c) She may have milk and some of the soup, but do not give her any solid food.
(d) The man is unconscious but no bones have been broken.
(e) After driving the cart market, you will have to let the horse have a rest before you make the journey back. I generally give it a bit of sugar.
(e') After driving the automobile to the market, you will have to put some oil in the engine before you make the journey back. I generally give the glass a cleaning.
(f) The design of the new houses is simple and they are cheap.
(g) There are straight lines and curves in the design, but no angles or circles.
(h) The rod inside the pump is made of copper.
(i) A look of disgust came on her face when she saw the whip in his hand.
Exercise 35. -- War and Peace
7 . Translate into Basic :
(a) There has been great material development in these countries, but little attention is give to religion.
(b) It is sad to see how this land, which was so fertile in peace time, has been damaged by war.
(c) All who came under his authority were kept in order by the fear of punishment.
(d) Secret orders were given for the destruction of all military papers.
(e) After he had been questioned about his connection with the secret society, he was given time in prison.
(f) Some of the greatest discoveries in the history of science have been made by chance.
(g) Nations are united not by love of one another but by having common interests.
(h) A completely new lighting system will have to be put into the house before it is used for offices.
(i) If the government makes a law controlling the price of land, it will be hated by the landowners.
(j) The effects of the burn may not be very serious if it is given medical attention quickly.
(k) The railway system is clearly marked on the map.
Exercise 36. -- A Poor Family
7 . Put into Basic :
(a) Some sailors were at work. they were painting the side of the warship which happily had not been badly damaged.
(b) Though my sister-in-law has been learning the piano for about three years, she is still only playing scales.
(c) This hard-working woman makes her living by doing washing and needlework.
(d) That baby has been trying for an hour. When are we going to have a little peace ?
(e) The monkey quickly got out of the baby-carriage when it saw that it was being laughed at.
(f) It is not surprising that Tom got low marks, because he got out of doing most of the work. If he had not been a bad boy, he might have been at the top of this school.
(g) They have given way to public opinion and made the tax on incomes lower, but the tax on tobacco is still the same.
(h) Every night the poor man had to make up a new story, and this went on for a thousand and one nights.
Exercise 37. -- The Radio
7 . Put into Basic :
(a) The writer's point is that there has not been enough thought about the causes of the unequal distribution. The public is over-ready to let its opinions be formed by newspaper propaganda and television advertisement.
(b) When the lights are turned on at the end of the second act, you will b able to have a look at the programme and see who the actors are.
(c) Someone in the house opposite keeps playing the same record on his phonograph.
(d) When a division is made of the money, the payments which were made the year before last will be taken into account.
(e) The further control of prices will be an unwise move if it has the effect of driving trade out of the country.
(f) These verses are by someone with a very delicate feeling for words.
(g) A request was made to the town authorities to let dancing take place in the square.
(h) When the order is given he will let off the gun by touching a button.
Exercise 38. -- A Day in Town

Exercise 41. -- Goes Marketing
7 . Put into Basic :
(a) The trade mark on the box of chalks is a doorway with the name of the maker across the top in letters of gold.
(b) The storekeeper was looking for another weight to put on the scales.
(c) Paint has a bad effect on the stomach. That is why most house. painters have delicate stomachs after they have been working for some years.
(d) Our housekeeper is better at marketing than she Is at doing addition, and she frequently makes slips in the accounts.
(e) There was an outcry at the meeting because the Secretary did not give straight answers to the questions which were put to him.
(f) Do not put any food which may go bad into the store-cupboard.
(g) After looking in her handbag, she gave her head a shake. The bit of paper on which she had put down the price wasn't there, but she was certain that it was over five pounds.
(h) When my father's turn came to say something, he made it clear that he had no feeling of hate in his heart but only regret for the damage which had been done.
Exercise 42. -- Basic for Everyday Needs
7. Put into Basic :
(a) The safe at the left of the door in the booking office is at least a yard long and about two feet high.
(b) A folder giving our prices will be posted to you tomorrow. Please send a money order or check with your order.
(c) She made the discovery of the loss of her ear-rings when she came back after posting her letters.
(d) The beautiful writing in this book will give pleasure even to readers who are not lovers of fiction.

Exercise 43. -- Going to the Pictures
7. Put into Basic:
(a) When they were very young they had been in love with one another ; but, meeting her sweetheart
again after five years, she made the discovery that her love for him was dead. Jim had become a waster.
(b) The gunman said quite openly that he had designs on a certain well-off person in the town.
(c) Stepping out of his airplane, the airman took out a cigarette. He was putting his hand in his trouser-pocket to get his lighter when the chief, who was watching him, gave an order and he was made a prisoner.
(d) The waterfall is a danger to the small boats which go down the river.
